Karen Aston appointed to USA Basketball Junior National Team Committee
University of Texas head women's basketball coach Karen Aston has been appointed to the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Committee, it was announced Monday.
The USA Basketball Junior National Team Committees, comprised of NCAA and athlete representatives, will issue invitations for trials and training camps and select coaching staffs and team members for college-aged teams, including USA Basketball U18 and U19 National Teams that will compete in the 2017 and 2019 FIBA U19 World Cups and 2018 and 2020 FIBA Americas U18 Championships, as well as the 2019 Pan American Games. The USA Women's Junior National Team Committee also will select the staff and athletes for the USA U23 National Team that will compete in August 2017 in the first U23 Four Nations Tournament, an event anticipated to be held annually through 2020.
George Washington head coach Jennifer Rizzotti will serve as chair of the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Committee. 2008 Olympic gold medalist Kara Lawson Barling will serve as the athlete representative, and joining Rizzotti as representatives of the NCAA are Aston, Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza and NC State head coach Wes Moore.
"I am extremely proud to be part of USA Basketball and am humbled by this opportunity to work with the greats of our game," Aston said. "I feel blessed and appreciative to have a chance to be part of the process of representing our sport and our country in international competition."
Aston was the 2017 Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year and one of four finalists nationally for the Naismith National Coach of the Year accolade. Aston has led Texas to four consecutive 20-plus-win seasons and four consecutive NCAA Tournament berths. The Longhorns have made three consecutive NCAA Sweet 16 showings, including an NCAA Elite Eight appearance in 2016.
Aston is the second-winningest coach in University of Texas women's basketball history with a 114-55 (.675) tally at the helm of the Forty Acres. She is 215-118 (.646) in 10 seasons as a collegiate head coach, including stops at Charlotte and North Texas.
The 2016-17 Longhorns compiled a 25-9 overall record, including a 15-3 mark to finish second in the Big 12 Conference. That tied the school record for most Big 12 Conference victories in a single season in program history. During this past season, Texas put together a 19-game win streak which, at the time, was the nation's second-longest active win streak and tied for the 10th-longest win streak in program history. The Longhorns won 14 consecutive games to begin Big 12 Conference play, which marked the best start to Big 12 play in program history.
Under Aston's direction this season, Brooke McCarty became the first player in UT school history to be named Big 12 Conference Player of the Year. Brianna Taylor earned Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year recognition and Joyner Holmes was named the Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year.
Aston and her staff have put together three consecutive top-six recruiting classes, according to espnW Hoop Gurlz rankings, including signing the nation's No. 3 incoming class for 2017-18.
Under Aston's direction, two players have been selected in the WNBA Draft, including 2016 first-round pick Imani Boyette.
